What Will This Grant Do for Henderson Community College?
The overall goal of this grant is to improve student achievement for at-risk students in Developmental and Gateway Education courses. This will be done through a series of activities that include modifying the curriculum to incorporate alternative teaching strategies and technology and strengthening our student support systems.
What does this mean for our students?
- An integrated support system for students who need assistance with academic, social, or financial needs through trained advisors and counselors.
- The latest technology in the classroom to assist in the learning process.
- Faculty knowledge of alternative teaching strategies so methods can be modified for different learning styles.
- A learner-centered environment that fosters the academic success of all students.
What does this mean for our Faculty and Staff?
- Access to the Learning Specialist. Jon Reidford, our Learning Specialist, will work with Faculty members in modifying the curriculum to incorporate alternative teaching strategies and technologoes to meet the different learning styles and needs of the students. Jon is available to meet with departments or individually to help Faculty members with how to improve instruction in the classroom.
- Access to the Advising Coach. Rebecca Emerson , our Advising Coach, will develop and implement programs that will help students succeed. Farrah will work with Faculty Advisors in strategies and resources to help their advisees succeed.
- The latest technology. All full-time faculty have received new computers, which is the beginning of the overall program to provide the most up-to-date technology for faculty and staff use.
- More classrooms will be upgraded to Smart Classrooms which provides more opportunity for Faculty to use the technology with teaching.
How will success be measured?
- Technology - Faculty and staff will show a greater satisfaction and use of technology in the classroom and with Student Support Services.
- Student Retention - A greater number of students will be retained from fall-to-fall and a higher number of degree completions as compared with previous years.
- Student Achievement - More students will earn passing grades in Developmental Education Courses and will show greater preparedness for College level courses. More students enrolled in Developmental Education courses will go on to complete their degree as compared to previous years.
