Shackelford new student rep on BOR

By LYNDSEE MARSH
News Reporter

Kari Shackelford of Southeast Kentucky Community and Technical College was recently elected the new student Community College KCTCS Board of Regents member.

There are 14 members in total for the KCTCS Board of Regents.
Eight representatives are appointed by the Governor. Two faculty, two staff, and two students are elected by the colleges.

“While a member of the Board, I plan to represent the students across the state to the best of my ability by keeping their best interest in mind,” Shackelford said.

“The biggest challenge currently facing the system is the
ability to maintain a quality level of education in the classroom when faced with budget cuts,” added Shackelford.

The regents just voted a 6.5% increase making tuition for the 2005-2006 academic year $98 per credit hour.

Out-of-State students from contiguous counties will pay $118 per credit hour while out- of-state students will pay $294.

All attending regents approved the increase, including the two students.
Student representative Cythia Osborne of Hazard Community and Technical College justified her decision.

“This increase allows us to maintain the quality education and programming that is expected of KCTCS with minimal financial burden to our students,” Osborne concluded.
